Comfort foods.
If you're unsure of my particular definition, you should make a visit to Burgoo Bistro: http://www.burgoo.ca/ (No, I'm not paid to advertise, but some things in life are just too darn good to keep to yourself. Burgoo is one of these things.)
Just one visit and you'll understand the power of macaroni n' cheese, fondue, and french onion soup on a rainy day where the water droplets weigh down your shoulders like bullets. Then again maybe you're just hungry, and you know what, that's fine too.
For me, there's something about curry beef brisket on rice that brings me back to many childhood memories. The newness of the experience is LONG-gone, but in its replacement is the comfort of familiarity and consistency. When nothing else seems to make sense on our 'downer days,' I know my curry will be yellow and my rice white. And that, my friends, is more than enough sometimes.
Someone I got to know well in high school promised me that through good times and bad I'd never be alone (although I would still often feel alone) because he'd be there for me. Even if he never kept to his promise, I wouldn't have held it against him since we were in high school and what he said is exactly the type of thing most kids say. (Tangent: I have never liked the term BFF For Life.) But the reality is, he kept his promise. He's my constant, and this is a shoutout of thanks to him. You, dear sir, are even better than my curry beef. That's saying something.
